What is Rusting and how to prevent Rust?

Rusting is a natural process of corrosion that occurs when an iron or metal alloy reacts with oxygen and moisture. Rust can gradually reduce the structural integrity of the metal if left untreated, so it’s important to prevent rust by regularly cleaning any objects made of metal and applying a protective coating such as paint or lubricant.

What is Rust?

Rust is an iron oxide, a typically reddish-brown oxide formed by iron and oxygen’s catalytic reaction in the presence of eroded or air moisture. Rust is typically associated with the corrosion of refined iron and is composed of hydrous iron(III) oxides (Fe2O3nH2O) and iron(III) oxide-hydroxide (FeO(OH), Fe(OH)3).

Any iron mass could eventually rust completely with enough time, water, and oxygen. Unlike the formation of patina on copper surfaces, surface rust is commonly flaky and crispy and provides no passivation protection to the underlying iron.

Corrosion of elemental iron and its alloys, such as steel, is commonly called rusting. Many other metals corrode similarly, but the resulting oxides are not commonly called “rust.”

What Is Rusting?

Rusting is an example of an oxidation reaction. Rust is formed when iron reacts with water and oxygen to form hydrated iron(III) oxide.

The reaction is written as iron + water + oxygen-hydrated iron(III) oxide.

Iron and steel rust when they come into contact with water and oxygen, both of which are required for rusting. When no air (containing oxygen) or water is present in the experiment below, the nail does not rust:

The oxygen is removed from the water by boiling it, and the layer of oil prevents it from re-entering. Water vapour is removed from the air by anhydrous calcium chloride.

How to Avoid Rust
